My tv does no have a usb support etc. Do i need some type of media player etc? I do not want to stream anything only plug in a usb stick and select whatever movie is on there and watch it like I would on a computer

If your TV does not have a USB port, then your out of luck. You could try a Media Player or a DVD player that has a USB port.

Ok so basically with a WD media player. I just plug it in to the TV and can plug a usb stick in and play whatever movie is on the stick on that tv?

EDIT WD doesnt seem to make that media player anymore. Its old. IS there a better one?

I feel like all the media players i look at are for streaming and for tv channels like netflix and apple tv and things like that. I do not want to watch tv with it. I just want it to play on my tv the contents on the usb drive i plug into it. aka avi's, mkv's etc. NO STREAMING AT ALL This is where I am confused on what to buy.

Yes the link you provided are old links from 2012 and 2014 except the last one. There must be newer prodcuts etc from 2016. But I am sl oasking the definition of it not jsut which product to buy.

I can recommend the Justop media box:-

I've bought four or five of these for friends and family over the years and have never found them wanting.
Connects to TV via HDMI (full size plug each end) or via AV socket and supports full HD.
It accepts USB or memory cards and supports just about every video format I can think of including full PAL/NTSC formats.
As a matter of interest it works perfectly with my unpowered 2.5 inch USB 3.0 2TB portable hard drive, although I understand that there may be issues with larger drives.
Hope this is the type of info you wanted.

I have several of these from Amazon:
iView 3500STBII Multi-Function Digital Converter Box with Recording and Media Playback

35 bucks and they work great on any TV, old or new. Many different connections. Reads from any USB source up to 4 TBs.
You can even attach a video source, cable or antenna, plug in any USB storage devise and it will also record.

Only one slight drawback I've found, it wont play subtitles unless they are hard coded.

What about the Roku ones? I see them always highly rated. Are those the same type of media player that I need?

The JUSTOP HD Media Box Player is a UK thing it seems. Not avilable in Canada . But that is the type of thing I am looking for. USB connection in front and plays movies from the usb stick

what about this ? IS this what Im looking for? Basically plug my tv into this via hdmi and stick my usb drive with the movies on it into it. Then the movies will show up in a menu on my tv screen and i will be able to choose which movie to watch?

I have Playon and stream everything from my comp directly to my tv. It converts on the fly to a playable media. They r going through some growing pains, but I have 34 bucks lifetime and can stream from any website (flash or html5) to the tv as well. They also have a recording feature available- grab stuff from netflix as well. It has new features to stream from cloud to tv, phone, tablets etc. Also can throw from phone to tv I think.

You have many options which the good folk of Bolt have shared with you including links to other threads where this capability has been discussed.

I would recommend getting yourself an Android box which supports Kodi as this approach will give you flexibility for your future needs

Ive tried many options to acheive this and found Amazon Fire TV box with Kodi to be the best option so far. It may not be as cheap as other boxes but it's well made, other cheaper android boxes I tried, died within weeks.

I used to download all my media then play from HDD but since discovering Kodi a year ago, we just stream all media now, save alot a time as I used to have to look what was new, watch trailers, download movie, trailer and artwork. copy to HDD and refresh media library.

Now we just click, click, click, play.

Fire TV box has USB but is limited to FAT 32 drives and 32GB i thing. Install Stickmount app, and currently i'm curently im running a 2TB NTFS USB drive.
